Show Dog The Bulldog
More known today as a show dog the bulldog of old was especially bred for the so called sport of bull baiting it was a very cruel and barbaric pastime which involved dogs being set on a bull the dogs were quite often killed by being gored or trampled to death by the bull ,the bulldog of old was a very different animal to the one we see in the the show ring today if the dog could do the job well he was considered a bulldog some had large head some didn’t some were stocky others were athetic.
There seems to be breeders today that seem to think that the dog of today would still be able to perform in this past time ,but the modern dog is afar cry from the original dog ,they tend too have lost all of there athletic ability thet have terrible breathing problems and the puppies have to be born by cesarean section due to the fact that they have abnormally large heads.
Some people are breeding dogs today that are trying too bring back the bulldog of old these dogs are known as olde bulldoges,one of the most famous breeders being David leavitt from the states, he started his breeding program by using modern day bulldog, bullmastiff American bulldog and American pit bulllterrier to produce a dog in similar appearance to the original bulldog which would be fully capable of competing in the sport of bullbaiting.
These dogs are being bred and whelping naturally the size of the dogs also is bigger then the show breed bein somewhere between the 80 to 100 lb mark.
These dogs are not recognised by the the kennel club of great Britain which is a great shame but if your lookin for a REAL bulldog then the the olde bulldogge would definitely be the better choice.
