The modern day kc staff is a far cry from its ancestors which were a very a athletic dog, developed in the black country in the west midlands of England, which were kept and developed by the mining community. They were used mainly for sporting purposes,i.e. ratting, badger baiting and the popular sport of dog fighting.

The breed were mainly respected for there abilities in these tasks it wasn’t as important as what they looked like but how good they were at these pastimes, they were very courageous and athletic dogs indeed ,pedigrees were not that important but best was bred to best so quality was paramount, it wasn’t until the early 1930s that the kennel club of great Britain became involved and unfortunately the demise of this once great breed started to deteriorate. Today’s KC (kennel club) dog tend too be short legged bulky and have lost most of there athletic ability, they are one of the country most popular breed but its a shame that such a magnificent dog has gone the way of the KC (kennel club) bulldog the bulldog influence has played a major part in the structure and the terrier influence has all but gone. Modern breeders want a dog with big heads and a stocky body thinking that’s the structure of a fighting dog, I’m not supporting these pastimes but would like too see the dogs of old with the same structure and temperament that has sadly all but gone.
